Description
Description
These one of a kind baskets are handwoven by a very talented group of weavers from Kenya who have complete creative freedom. This results in exquisite designs that are only ever made once. Naturally dyed in earthy tones of black, rust and cream. Perfect for cosmetics, as a desk tidy or even for dry food storage in the kitchen. These baskets also make beautiful woven planters for houseplants (just make sure to add a waterproof liner).
The process involved in producing these unique baskets is meticulous and highly skilled. Sisal grass is hand stripped using wooden tools and bare feet, and then it is hand rolled to a very fine twine on the thighs before being woven using a classic twining technique. The dyes used to create the beautiful colourways are all 100% natural, and dyed by hand.

About the maker
About the maker
The Basket Room partner with over 3,000 weavers across Kenya, Ghana and East Africa. Sustainability is at the core of everything they do, from slow production methods and the materials and dyes used, to their supply chain and logistics. These baskets are handwoven by skilled craftswomen working as part of a network of village cooperatives in Tanzania. As is the case with most basket weavers in Africa, the art of weaving has usually been passed down the family line, though these Tanzanian weavers are also regularly trained in product development and new weaving techniques. In general, the weavers have grown up as subsistence farmers, but climate challenges and spiralling living costs mean that they can no longer rely on this to sustain themselves. Consequently, basket weaving provides an increasingly vital source of income for the weavers and their families.
