About the Maker
The Basket Room partner with over 3,000 weavers across Kenya, Ghana and East Africa. Sustainability is at the core of everything they do, from slow production methods and the materials and dyes used, to their supply chain and logistics. These baskets are handwoven by skilled craftswomen working as part of a network of village cooperatives in Tanzania. As is the case with most basket weavers in Africa, the art of weaving has usually been passed down the family line, though these Tanzanian weavers are also regularly trained in product development and new weaving techniques. In general, the weavers have grown up as subsistence farmers, but climate challenges and spiralling living costs mean that they can no longer rely on this to sustain themselves. Consequently, basket weaving provides an increasingly vital source of income for the weavers and their families.
